Reference Checks

The policy of Columbia University is to perform reference checks on prospective employees.

References provide a valuable complement to interviews and provide an opportunity to gain insight regarding the prior employer's views about the applicant's work performance, accomplishments, strengths and weakness. A consistent method of reviewing these references will contribute to a fair assessment of candidates. In addition, it allows hiring managers to verify information that the applicant has provided including but not limited to dates of employment, job title/position, responsibilities, and reason for leaving.

Information on an internal transfer’s previous performance may be required and should be in accordance with the University’s Managing Transfers, Internal Mobility and Re-Hires policy. Hiring Managers or Local Human Resources Staff should contact their Senior Human Resources Business Partner to obtain information from documented performance appraisals and other information to assist in the selection process.
