Prohibition of On-Campus Credit Card Marketing to Students

The on-campus advertising, marketing or merchandising of credit cards directed at students is prohibited.

Reasons for this Policy

Campus facilities should not be used to support credit card marketing tactics that are directed at the University's student population, especially undergraduate students. Credit card selection should be based on the consumer's review of credit card terms, not based on marketing promotions by the University.

Who Is Governed by This Policy

All University employees, students and commercial visitors are governed by this Policy.

Who Should Know This Policy

Anyone conducting University business with banks, credit card companies or financial services vendors, University Student Services and Student Affairs administrators, Columbia University Facilities Operations personnel, and all members of the University community who are responsible for managing space or overseeing events within academic and administrative buildings or on campus should know this Policy.

Exclusions & Special Situations

This Policy does not prohibit the mailing of alumni affinity credit card offers to a graduate of the University who remains a student or returns as a student to one of Columbia's schools. The policy also does not prohibit the marketing of alumni affinity credit cards on the University's Alumni Association website, which is directed to alumni, not students. However, this Policy does prohibit the provision of lists of current students, who have not yet graduated from one of Columbia's schools, to credit card companies for the purpose of offering credit cards to those students.

Responsibilities

Commercial entities that are found to be in intentional and material violation of this Policy may be denied access to the campus for a specified period, depending on the nature and extent of the violation(s). Any person who intentionally violates this Policy will receive a warning, and violations that are found to be material may result in disciplinary action.
